I can't tell you how many plain horrible ice berg lettuce salads, soggy melon dominated fruit plates, or plain baked potatoes I've had in my years of being vegan. Often I cheat and will carry something with me if I know I'm going some place I can't get much like stashing vegan cream cheese in my purse so I can have a bagel, etc. Usually I am able to convince them to bring me some oil and vinegar for a salad though, that helps a lot. I am always shocked that people don't know how to cook vegetables without animal byproducts. You did your best and I'm sure your Mom appreciated being taken out. :c)I hear ya!
